Healthy Eating Tips

Eating a balanced diet in college is one of those things that's a lot easier said than done. Luckily, it's also one of those things that you can achieve by making a few small changes. Here are some simple tips that can make a big difference:

  1. Eat a good breakfast. You'll feel less hungry later, and be able to focus better in your classes.
  2. Keep healthy snacks around for late-night study sessions. Then you won't be stuck with vending machine options at 3 a.m. while studying for a midterm.
  3. Don't avoid the salad bar in the cafeteria. It's probably the healthiest area.
  4. Remember that alcohol has calories -- but skipping meals to make up for alcohol calories is not a good idea.
  5. Drink plenty of water.
  6. If you're strapped for cash, find events on campus that serve free food. They're everywhere
  7. Listen to your body when it tells you you're full. You probably are. And just because that cake looks good doesn't mean you should stuff yourself for it.
  8. Make time to eat instead of just grabbing a quick meal. You'll be more aware of what you're eating.
  9. Talk to the school nutritionist or food services director if you have concerns or difficulty finding foods that you like. They'll give you more suggestions, or maybe even add items to the menu.
  10. Balance your meal. Try to include at least 3 different food groups at every meal. And try not to eat too much of one food group.
  11. If you're still having trouble, make a commitment with a friend to improve your eating habits. If someone else is holding you to it, you're more likely to stick to the plan.
